Narrative theory analysis of 'Alone'- A short film

Alone is a 6 minute and 10 second short film that is of the post-apocalyptic sci-fi genre. I believe this product is aimed at anybody above the age of 15 years, and who can comprehend the idea of being the last person on planet Earth. More specifically, the target audience may be people who enjoy sci-fi drama films and who don't mind a lack of on screen action, which is the case in this short film, the film plays around more with the idea of solitude and isolation the character is experiencing.

In terms of the audience using this product, the uses and gratifications theory can be applied. Personal integrative needs and affective needs may be a result from using this product. If somebody is in a bad, upset mood they may use this product to try and empathise with it and fulfill their needs. Or they could use this product to satisfy themselves as they know they're not experiencing the same things as in the short films, the same things apply to the blockbuster film 'I Am Legend'. To link with personal integrative needs, people may want to to reassure their status and welfare by watching this product, the nature of this short film will then make them feel a lot more stable in terms of their real life; they know their life is not like of the characters in the short film and for that they feel a lot more reassured.

The way the audience interprets the text depends on the way they think about it. They could use it as a form of escapism, given the solitary theme of the film, or they could use it solely for entertainment and to try and pass some time by watching a piece of media; only if the themes and ideas are out of their interest.
